1 out of 5 stars Way too heavy   June 23, 2010
Mike (NYC)
I use spatulas as levers, sometimes to move heavy amounts of dough, etc, and also when I'm doing something that requires fine control. This spatula is the heaviest I've ever used - uncomfortably so. I'm surprised that it receives such high ratings.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible!   May 24, 2010
J. Pelka
Like other reviewers, I bought this spatula upon a recommendation from Cooks Illustrated. I also was very happy with it initially. It has a nice handle and scrapes well but after a few months of use (never in high temperatures), pieces started chipping off. Very quickly several more pieces came off and I threw it out! I used it almost exclusively for batters and doughs and always hand-washed it. It's garbage. Don't waste your money...

5 out of 5 stars The Best Rubber Policeman   March 11, 2010

If you make desserts, bake, or create sauces, you need something to get the last bits out of a bowl or saucepan. You can use your finger which is ineeficient v=but does have the bonus of giving youi a chance to lick a delicious sauce off it. Traditionally the tool to use is a rubber spatula. They are made of white rubber and do tend to deteriorate over time. As these rubber spatulas "gather all the evidence", they are often known as "rubber Policemen".

Now the rubber policeman is being made redundant. The tool to use in its place is a silicon spatula. It has several advantages. A sharper edge making it better at scraping off the last of a sauce. Better heat resistance, handy when making candy or caramels.. Longer life, less deterioration with use. Finally, the silicone is smooth with no pores to trap food making it easy to clean.

Of the several silicone enhanced rubber policemen, the Tovolo seems to be the best. It comes in several colours, handy if you want some for different tasks that you wouldn't want to confuse. Such as one for soap making and one for gravy and sauce.

5 out of 5 stars best spatula ever invented   December 29, 2009

Fantastic product. Not only does it scrape sides very well but it's sturdy enough to use for stirring. Worked wonderfully when I made fudge.

1 out of 5 stars Disintegrates over time   December 14, 2009

This spatula was great until chunks started falling off into the pot. I only hand washed this and used it for stirring food but after 6 months it is in pieces. Chunks came off and also major "rips" in the silicone appeared rending it useless. It is now in the trash.
