I already own a hand-crank plastic snow cone machine that uses the ice molds and needed something faster and more convenient for a birthday party. The idea of using bagged ice made it even more appealing but I wasn't sure what the shaved ice would really be like, since you can use ice in the hand crank type but it turns out more "chipped".
It shaves a serving of ice in about 10 seconds, but the texture is more like flake style that you would find on a salad bar. A good quality syrup will stay near the top but the watery stuff that you find seasonally at your local discount superstore will sink straight to the bottom. It's difficult to mold into a traditional snowcone shape and is very crunchy - it doesn't create a dense "slurpee" texture that you can eat like an ice cream cone. So it depends on how much of a snowcone snob you are. I will keep it on the counter for the purpose of crushed ice but if I'm really craving a good snowcone, I'll break out the hand-crank shaver and ice molds. The kids don't seem to care either way so less work for me, the better.
Just after I got this shaver in the mail I saw an identical unit with a more widely recognized name on seasonal clearance. Based on its original price this unit is still a similar value.

This is a perfectly acceptable machine. What it doesn't do is make that very fluffy, amazing shaved ice you get from a commercial vendor. The ice comes out cut fairly fine but it is still crunchy--more slushy than snowy. Great for margaritas but not light enough (so that it melts immediately on your tongue) for true shave ice.

i got this as an alternative to the margaritaville machine. i shaved the ice then used a blender. THats all the margaritaville machine is anyway
it works well but after a few hours of use it died. actually, it wouldn't shut off. it just kept running. i returned it. But when it was working it was great

This is a great product. I looked at a lot of different ice shavers and am very pleased I ordered this. It's easy to use and produces perfectly shaved ice in seconds. A plus: use ice cubes instead of those round blocks of ice. It's a sturdy little machine that works well and looks good on your kitchen counter. I definitely recommend it.
