Great for thick smoothies September 7, 2010 Couple in LA We usually make really thick protein / fruit shakes that you have to eat with a spoon. In our old blender this would mean stopping every 10 seconds or so to take a spoon and mix the ingredients in the blender manually...then add more juice, then mix again, etc.
Not with the KitchenAid 5-speed. You just add all the ingredients and press the button. Our smoothies have never been this finely blended...you can barely see the little bits of blueberries- and the one touch option is awesome.
PLUS the value in much better than the Vitamix or other $400 plus varieties. (Unless you have that kind of money to spend on a blender)
It's a definite step up from the typical $20-40 buys at department stores.
Great August 30, 2010 Leif Pedersen Just what I needed. I had a Hamilton Beach, which has a jar with a small base, meaning it takes *forever* to blend anything. The wider base is better. This blends in 10 seconds what my old one blended in 5 minutes. This also means the motor runs for such a short time I'm not concerned about it burning out.
Leaky August 25, 2010 Melissa K Parker I loved this blender for about two years, until the pitcher started leaking. I can't use it at all any more.
I like it August 22, 2010 buenhec (California) Its a little bit noisy but it crushes ice and makes smoothies like no other blender I have used. It looks great in the kitchen.
this product used to come with a glass carafe August 21, 2010 Sanity Clause (S.F. ... (me) ... S.J.) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have the old KSB5, which used to come with a glass carafe. It is pretty good, with a few faults. When I saw this polycarbonate carafe had replaced the original glass one, I scooped up a few of the old style KSBR5's to give as wedding presents for nieces and nephews. Why use a plastic carafe when plastic has so many health issues? - well, except that it is cheaper to manufacture, obviously. Smoothies are one thing, but we actually use ours for curries, and even for grinding idli batter: This is made by grinding raw rice and beans that have been soaked for a few hours. I don't know if Kitchenaid has cheapened the motor too, along with changing the carafe from glass to polycarbonate. Our old one has a strong, quiet motor that you can turn on and leave grinding for 5 minutes without worrying about it smoking. These people had a good product, and I cannot figure out why they wanted to mess it up. - well, except that some management genius decided that they could all become rich by cutting manufacturing costs. They guys who decided to do this probably got big bonuses for messing up a perfectly good product and lowering the status of the brand name.
